My name is chiara pilar. chiara was the name of an italian saint whereas pilar was a name common among the revolutionary fighters of the spanish civil war. therefore, in some ways, my name helps give me a balance between sacred and profane.

my mother is from texas. from her i inherited the need for space inside and out as well as the concept that borders often define us.

my father is from an area in tuscany knows as la maremma. from him i inherited my etruscan origins. the etruscans liked to use the earth's clay to shape new realities. they also believed in life after death. so do i but in a different way. for me a photograph can transform an ephemeral moment into an eternal reality.
